As a follower of any sport, it makes it far more interesting and personable if you have a favourite team to support. American football is no exception but which NFL team to follow?
Here I will list all thirty-two NFL teams and break them down into reasons supporters of British football teams may choose to select them as ‘my team’.
Some teams may be mentioned more than once if we see more than one team to connect them with.
League Structure
The thirty-two teams are put into eight divisions of four. These divisions are collected into two conferences of sixteen, the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference. The two conferences were formed when the NFL (National Football League) merged with the competing AFL (American Football League) in 1970. The NFC represents the older and more established NFL, while the AFC represents the ‘upstart’ AFL.
Each team in a division will face their three rivals twice per year which immediately gives some strong rivalries, although some inter-divisional rivalries have also built up over the years such as the Raiders vs the Steelers and the Cowboys vs the Packers. The scheduling formula used by the NFL ensures that every franchise will play every other franchise at least once every four years.
